3 Essential Tips to Stay Healthy During Hajj

Hajj is a sacred journey that millions of Muslims around the world look forward to. While it’s a deeply spiritual experience, it also requires strong physical preparation. This is especially true for Indonesian pilgrims who must adjust to the extreme heat and dry climate of Saudi Arabia, which is quite different from the tropical weather at home.

To help you stay healthy and perform your pilgrimage smoothly, here are three important health tips from the Indonesian Ministry of Health:

1. Protect Yourself from the Heat

Temperatures in Makkah and Madinah during the Hajj season can exceed 40°C (104°F). Long exposure to direct sunlight increases the risk of heatstroke. To stay safe, always wear a wide-brimmed hat or carry an umbrella when outside, especially during rituals like tawaf or stoning of the devil (jumrah).

Wearing light, breathable, and sweat-absorbing clothing also helps your body stay cool throughout the day.

2. Limit Outdoor Activities Outside of Worship

The Hajj rituals already require a lot of physical effort. It's best to avoid extra activities that involve walking long distances or spending time under the sun. Save your energy for the essential parts of the pilgrimage.

If you want to shop or explore, choose cooler times of day such as early morning after Fajr or in the evening. Getting enough rest is just as important to help your body recover after physical exertion.

3. Stay Hydrated

Dehydration is one of the most common health problems during Hajj. Make sure to drink plenty of water regularly, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Avoid drinks with caffeine or high sugar content, as they can make you lose fluids faster.

Carrying a personal water bottle and refilling it whenever possible is a simple habit that can help keep you hydrated during your stay in the Holy Land.

A Healthy Body for a Peaceful Pilgrimage

Staying healthy during Hajj isn’t just about physical wellness. It’s also part of your effort to perform the pilgrimage with full devotion until completion. Hopefully, these tips help you feel more prepared, comfortable, and focused during your time in the Holy Land.
