How to Perform Tarawih Prayer Alone at Home

Ramadan is a month of immense blessings, forgiveness, and mercy from Allah (SWT). During this time, every act of worship is magnified, and Muslims are encouraged to increase their devotion through both obligatory and voluntary acts of worship. One of the most significant voluntary prayers during Ramadan is the tarawih prayer.

Tarawih is part of the Qiyamul Lail (night prayer), a practice strongly recommended by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. The rewards of Tarawih are immense, as highlighted in the following hadith:

"Whoever prays (the night prayer) during Ramadan with faith and in the hope of reward, their past sins will be forgiven." (Narrated by Bukhari & Muslim)

Typically performed in congregation at the mosque, tarawih can also be prayed alone at home in certain situations. If you find yourself needing to pray alone, this guide will walk you through the intention (niyyah) and the correct procedure for performing tarawih prayer at home.

The Virtues of Tarawih Prayer

Tarawih is not just an ordinary Sunnah prayer; it carries tremendous rewards that make it one of the most cherished acts of worship during Ramadan.

  1. Reward Equivalent to Praying the Entire Night

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

"Whoever prays with the Imam until he finishes, it will be recorded for him as if he prayed the entire night." (Narrated by Tirmidhi)

Even when performed alone, Tarawih carries immense rewards, provided it is performed with sincerity and devotion.

  1. Strengthening the Connection with Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala

Tarawih offers an opportunity for Muslims to draw closer to Allah, increase their dhikr, and strengthen their faith throughout the month of Ramadan. It is an excellent chance to seek forgiveness and blessings. To make it easier, you can also access the collection of Daily Prayers on Muamalat DIN.

Intention for Performing Tarawih Prayer Alone at Home

Like all prayers in Islam, tarawih begins with a sincere intention in the heart. The correct intention for performing tarawih alone is:

اُصَلِّى سُنَّةَ التَّرَاوِيْحِ رَكْعَتَيْنِ مُسْتَقْبِلَ الْقِبْلَةِ أَدَاءً لِلهِ تَعَالَى

Ushalli sunnatat tarāwīhi rak‘atayni mustaqbilal qiblati adā’an lillāhi ta‘ālā.

I intend to pray the Sunnah prayer of Tarawih, two rak’ahs, facing the qibla, for the sake of Allah (SWT).

This intention should be made sincerely in the heart before starting the prayer.

How to Perform Tarawih Prayer Alone at Home

Tarawih can be performed with 8 or 20 raka'at depending on one’s personal preference or ability. Here’s a step-by-step guide to performing Tarawih prayer alone:

  1. Prepare for Prayer
  • Perform wudu (ablution) properly.
  • Ensure you are wearing clean and modest clothing that covers your aurah.
  • Choose a quiet and comfortable location for prayer to ensure focus and tranquility.

  1. Decide on the Number of Raka’at

You can choose between two common options:

  • 8 Raka’at: Prayed in sets of two raka’at (with four tasleems).
  • 20 Raka’at: Prayed in sets of two raka’at (with ten tasleems).

  1. Step-by-Step Guide for Performing Tarawih

For each set of two raka’at, follow this order:

  • Begin with Takbiratul Ihram by saying "Allahu Akbar" and raising both hands.
  • Recite Dua Iftitah (Opening Supplication).
  • Recite Surah Al-Fatihah
  • Recite a short surah (such as Surah Al-Ikhlas or Surah Al-Kafirun).
  • Perform Ruku’ (bowing) and say subhana rabbiyal 'azim three times.
  • Stand up straight (I’tidal) and say Sami’ Allahu liman hamidah, Rabbana lakal hamd.
  • Perform the first Sujood (prostration), saying subhana rabbiyal a’la three times.
  • Sit in Jalsah (between the two sujoods) and say Rabbighfirli warhamni.
  • Perform the second Sujood, saying subhana rabbiyal a’la three times.
  • Stand for the next raka’at and repeat the cycle.
  • After two raka’at, recite tashahhud (testification of faith) and conclude with tasleem (salutation).

Repeat this process until you complete your desired number of raka’at.

  1. Conclude with Witr Prayer

After completing the Tarawih prayer, it is highly recommended to perform the Witr prayer, which can be prayed as one, three, or more raka’at, according to your preference.

Tips for Performing Tarawih Prayer Alone at Home

Performing Tarawih alone can still be spiritually enriching. Here are some tips to help you focus and ensure the prayer remains rewarding:

  1. Choose the Right Time

Perform Tarawih after Isha prayer and avoid delaying it too long, as delaying may cause you to become too tired or fall asleep.

  1. Maintain a Sincere Intention

Ensure that your intention is made sincerely for Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala, not just out of habit or obligation. The reward comes from your devotion.

  1. Create a Peaceful Environment

Minimize distractions by turning off any background noise such as TV or music. A quiet environment will help you maintain focus during prayer.

  1. Make Dua After Prayer

Take advantage of the time after Tarawih to engage in dhikr and make dua (supplication). Ramadan nights are considered especially powerful, and the chances of your dua being accepted are greatly increased.

Don’t Miss Out on Tarawih Prayer

Tarawih is a deeply rewarding prayer in Ramadan. If you cannot attend the mosque, you can still reap the benefits of this prayer by performing it at home. With the right intention, focus, and devotion, you can earn the full rewards of Tarawih prayer, whether in congregation or alone.

May Allah (SWT) accept all of our prayers and acts of worship during this blessed month of Ramadan. Ameen.
