Zakat Fitrah is an obligatory charity that every Muslim must pay before the celebration of Eid al-Fitr. It serves as a form of worship and a means of cleansing oneself from any shortcomings during the month of Ramadan. Understanding the correct intention and procedure is essential to ensure the zakat fulfills the Islamic requirements and is deemed valid. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know about Zakat Fitrah.

What is Zakat Fitrah?

Zakat Fitrah is a compulsory charity paid by Muslims who are able to do so, including both men and women, adults, and children. How to Pay Zakat Fitrah: Step-by-Step Procedure

Once you’ve made the intention, it’s time to understand the proper procedure for paying Zakat Fitrah. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

  1. Determine the Number of People You Are Paying for

Zakat Fitrah is owed for each person you are responsible for, whether it’s yourself, your spouse, children, or even parents. For instance, a husband needs to pay zakat for himself, his wife, and any children he is supporting.

  1. Know the Amount to Pay

Zakat Fitrah is generally given in the form of staple food, such as rice, with a typical amount of about 2.5 kg per person. Alternatively, you can pay an equivalent amount in cash. As of 2025, the Badan Zakat Nasional (BAZNAS) has set the zakat amount at approximately IDR 47,000 per person, although this may vary depending on the region.

  1. Pay Zakat Fitrah at the Correct Time

Paying Zakat Fitrah at the right time is crucial to ensure it meets the requirements. Here’s a breakdown of the recommended timings:

  • Obligatory Time: After sunset on the last day of Ramadan.
  • Sunnah Time: From Fajr until before the Eid al-Fitr prayer.
  • Permissible Time: From the beginning of Ramadan until before the Eid al-Fitr prayer.
  • Makruh Time: After the Eid prayer until before sunset on Eid day.
  • Haram Time: After sunset on Eid day.

While Zakat Fitrah can be paid anytime during Ramadan, it is recommended to do so at the end of the month. This allows it to serve its intended purpose of purifying any faults, such as unintentional bad words or gossip during the fast.

  1. Giving the Zakat Fitrah

Once the amount is determined and the intention is made, the zakat can be given directly to those in need (mustahik), or it can be distributed through zakat collectors (amil zakat) who ensure it reaches the eligible recipients. It’s advisable to pay through an amil zakat to ensure the distribution is accurate and effective.

  1. Du'a for the Giver of Zakat

Once the zakat is received by the mustahik, they are encouraged to make a prayer for the giver:

ﺁﺟَﺮَﻙ ﺍﻟﻠﻪُ ﻓِﻴْﻤَﺎ ﺍَﻋْﻄَﻴْﺖَ، ﻭَﺑَﺎﺭَﻙَ ﻓِﻴْﻤَﺎ ﺍَﺑْﻘَﻴْﺖَ ﻭَﺟَﻌَﻠَﻪُ ﻟَﻚَ ﻃَﻬُﻮْﺭًﺍ

Aajarakallahu fiimaa a’thaita, wa baaraka fiimaa abqaita wa ja’alahu laka thahuuran

“May Allah reward you for what you have given and bless what you have kept, and make it a means of purification for you.”

Purifying Your Wealth and Self through Zakat Fitrah

Zakat Fitrah is not just a charitable donation—it is an essential religious duty for every Muslim that purifies the soul and cleanses wealth. By paying Zakat Fitrah at the right time and with the correct intention, we not only earn rewards from Allah but also help those in need. It’s a means of fulfilling our responsibility to society, while also improving our spiritual well-being.

If you are unable to personally give your Zakat Fitrah, consider using Muamalat DIN, where it will be efficiently distributed to those who need it the most.
