5 Virtues of the Month of Rajab and Recommended Acts of Worship

The month of Rajab holds a special place in the Islamic calendar. As the seventh month of the Hijri year, Rajab is one of the four sacred months (Al-Asyhur Al-Hurum) that are highly honored in Islam. According to NU Online, Rajab is one of the months Allah has declared sacred, alongside Dhu al-Qa’dah, Dhu al-Hijjah, and Muharram. This is emphasized in the following verse from the Quran:

إِنَّ عِدَّةَ الشُّهُورِ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ اثْنَا عَشَرَ شَهْرًا فِي كِتَابِ اللهِ يَوْمَ خَلَقَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ مِنْهَا أَرْبَعَةٌ حُرُمٌ (At-Tawbah: 36)

“Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve [lunar] months in the register of Allah from the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred.”

Because of its significance, Rajab is a perfect time for Muslims to intensify their worship and strengthen their relationship with Allah. Below are the virtues of Rajab and the recommended acts of worship to make the most of this blessed month.

Virtues of the Month of Rajab

  1. A Scared Month
Rajab is one of the four sacred months in Islam, alongside Dzulqa’dah, Dzulhijjah, and Muharram. Known as Al-Asyhur Al-Hurum, these months hold a special status, encouraging Muslims to increase acts of goodness and steer clear of wrongdoing. What makes Rajab particularly significant is that good deeds earn multiplied rewards, while sins carry greater consequences. It’s a time for reflection, self-improvement, and deepening one’s faith.
  2. A Month of Forgiveness
Rajab is known as a month of divine forgiveness. Muslims are encouraged to frequently seek Allah’s forgiveness (istighfar), repent for their sins, and renew their commitment to obedience and devotion to Allah.
  3. The Event of Isra’ Mi’raj
The 27th of Rajab marks the historic event of Isra’ Mi’raj, the miraculous night journey and ascension of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). This event not only led to the establishment of the five daily prayers but also serves as a reminder for Muslims to maintain their connection with Allah through worship.
  4. A Time of Answered Prayers
The first night of Rajab is regarded as a special time when prayers are answered. Muslims are encouraged to make the most of this blessed period by offering heartfelt supplications for both worldly and eternal blessings.
  5. Preparation for Ramadan
Rajab is an excellent time to start preparing for the holy month of Ramadan. By enhancing acts of worship during Rajab, Muslims can build beneficial habits that will carry over into Ramadan, allowing for a more fruitful and spiritually fulfilling experience.

Recommended Acts of Worship in Rajab

  1. Seeking Forgiveness and Repentance One of the key practices in Rajab is increasing istighfar (seeking forgiveness). This act not only helps cleanse the soul of sins but also brings one closer to Allah’s mercy and grace.
  2. Fasting Sunnah Although there is no specific obligation to fast during Rajab, Muslims are encouraged to observe voluntary fasts, such as on Mondays and Thursdays or the White Days (Ayyamul Bidh) on the 13th, 14th, and 15th of the lunar month. These acts of worship help nurture piety and earn greater rewards.
  3. Performing Sunnah Prayers Engaging in Sunnah prayers, such as Dhuha, Tahajjud, and Rawatib (voluntary prayers before or after obligatory ones), is highly recommended during Rajab. These additional prayers strengthen the bond between a servant and their Creator.
  4. Reading and Reflecting on the Quran Rajab is an opportune time to reconnect with the Quran. Muslims are encouraged to recite, contemplate its meanings, and apply its teachings in daily life, thus deepening their faith and understanding.
  5. Giving Charity and Doing Good Deeds Charity and acts of kindness are among the best ways to utilize the blessings of Rajab. By helping those in need, Muslims not only assist others but also gain multiplied rewards. With apps like Muamalat DIN, giving charity has become even more convenient—simply download the app, select the ZISWAF menu, and share goodness anytime, anywhere.
