How to Use QRIS Abroad Easily and List of Supported Countries

Traveling overseas is now more convenient with the introduction of cross-border QRIS, a payment feature that lets Indonesians make transactions abroad simply by scanning a QR code at partnered merchants. No more exchanging large amounts of cash or carrying multiple cards because everything can be done seamlessly through your mobile banking app or e-wallet.

This initiative is a collaboration between Bank Indonesia and several central banks across ASEAN and East Asia, aiming to strengthen regional payment connectivity and support digital financial inclusion across borders.

Countries That Support Cross-Border QRIS

As of now, QRIS can already be used in several partner countries connected through national payment systems, including:

  • Thailand
  • Malaysia
  • Singapore
  • The Philippines
  • Vietnam
  • Laos
  • Brunei Darussalam
  • Japan
  • South Korea

Bank Indonesia and its regional partners continue to expand this collaboration, ensuring QRIS can be used in more countries soon. This initiative marks Indonesia’s commitment to enhancing cross-border payment efficiency and strengthening its role in the global financial ecosystem.

How to Use QRIS Abroad

Using QRIS overseas works almost the same as using it in Indonesia—the only difference lies in the automatic currency conversion process. Here’s a quick step-by-step guide:

  1. Make sure your app supports cross-border QRIS
Use a mobile banking or e-wallet app that’s already registered and compatible with international QRIS transactions.
  2. Ensure you have enough balance
Check your account or e-wallet balance before your trip to make sure you can cover all planned expenses abroad.
  3. Find merchants with a QRIS or cross-border QR logo
Look for the QRIS logo near the cashier or on the payment terminal.
  4. Scan the merchant’s QR code
Point your phone’s camera at the code. The merchant’s name and transaction amount should appear on your screen.
  5. Enter the transaction amount (in local currency)
The system will automatically convert it to Indonesian rupiah based on the current exchange rate.
  6. Confirm and enter your PIN
Double-check all details before completing the payment. Once processed, you’ll receive a confirmation notification in your app.

Benefits of Using QRIS Abroad

Cross-border QRIS doesn’t just make payments easier, it also offers several advantages for travelers:

  • Simple and fast. No need for currency exchange or multiple cards.
  • Transparent exchange rates. The system automatically converts your payment based on real-time rates.
  • Secure and regulated. Every transaction is recorded within the banking system and supervised by official financial authorities.
  • Supports a digital lifestyle. Enables cashless, modern, and practical payments even while traveling abroad.

Tips Before Using QRIS Overseas

To ensure smooth and safe transactions, keep these in mind before using QRIS abroad:

  • Activate international service on your mobile banking app
Not all apps automatically support cross-border access, so check and enable the feature beforehand.
  • Use a secure internet connection
Avoid public Wi-Fi during transactions to protect your personal and financial data.
  • Check your daily transaction limit
Some banks set daily QRIS limits for added security.
  • Keep your transaction records
Although the system records payments automatically, it’s wise to save screenshots or notifications as personal proof.
