5 Virtues of Charity During Ramadan

Ramadan is a special month filled with blessings, a time when Muslims are encouraged to increase their acts of worship, including giving charity. Charity, or sadaqah, is not only a means to earn reward but also a way to purify wealth and benefit others. In Islam, charity during Ramadan holds even greater merit than in other months. Here are five key virtues of giving charity during Ramadan.

1. Multiplied Rewards

One of the most significant virtues of giving charity during Ramadan is the multiplication of rewards. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

"The best of charity is charity during Ramadan." (Hadith, Tirmidhi)

Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala promises abundant rewards for every good deed performed sincerely in this blessed month. Therefore, Ramadan presents a unique opportunity to increase acts of charity, whether through money, food, or time.

2. Completing the Fast

Charity not only holds the value of a good deed, but it also complements the act of fasting. In Islam, fasting is not just about abstaining from food and drink; it’s also about fostering empathy towards those who are less fortunate. By giving charity, we help those in need, making our fast more meaningful.

Furthermore, charity can also atone for small sins, as the Prophet ﷺ said:

"Charity extinguishes sins just as water extinguishes fire." (Hadith, Tirmidhi)

3. Bringing Blessings to Your Sustenance

Contrary to the common belief that giving charity reduces wealth, charity actually increases it and brings blessings. Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala mentions in the Qur'an:

“The example of those who spend their wealth in the cause of Allah is that of a grain that sprouts into seven ears, each bearing one hundred grains. And Allah multiplies ˹the reward even more˺ to whoever He wills. For Allah is All-Bountiful, All-Knowing.” (Quran, Al-Baqarah: 261)

The blessings from charity extend beyond material wealth to include inner peace, business prosperity, and ease in various life affairs.

4. Gaining Intercession on the Day of Judgment

Charity given with sincerity will serve as a protector on the Day of Judgment. The Prophet ﷺ said:

“The believer's shade on the Day of Resurrection will be his charity.” (Hadith, Ahmad)

Charity during Ramadan can help secure intercession and protection from the intense heat of the Day of Judgment. The more charity one gives, the greater the chances of receiving blessings in both this life and the Hereafter.

5. Fostering Social Solidarity and Compassion

Ramadan is the perfect time to share happiness with others, especially those in need. Through charity, we can support those struggling to afford food for iftar (the breaking of the fast) or suhoor (the pre-dawn meal), as well as ease their financial burdens.

Islam emphasizes the importance of helping those in need, as The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) taught us:

"Whoever feeds a fasting person will have a reward like theirs, without that detracting from their reward in the slightest." (Hadith, Tirmidhi)

By giving charity during Ramadan, we not only assist others but also strengthen solidarity and compassion among the Muslim community.
