The Power of Dhuha Prayer: Intentions, Rituals, and Benefits

Dhuha prayer is a recommended Sunnah prayer taught by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). It is performed in the morning, from after sunrise until just before the Dhuhr prayer. Although not obligatory, Dhuha prayer carries numerous spiritual and worldly benefits for Muslims. In this article, we will explore its intentions, steps, benefits, and virtues in a detailed yet easy-to-understand manner.

The Intention of Dhuha Prayer

Intention (niyyah) plays a crucial role in every act of worship, including the Dhuha prayer. It signifies one’s sincere dedication to performing an act solely for the sake of Allah Almighty. Below is the intention for performing a two-rak’ah Dhuha prayer:

Niyyah for Dhuha Prayer (Two Rak’ahs):

أُصَلِّيْ سُنَّةَ الضُّحَى رَكْعَتَيْنِ لِلّٰهِ تَعَالَى

Ushallî sunnatad dhuhâ rak‘ataini lillâhi ta‘âlâ

Meaning: “I intend to perform the Sunnah Dhuha prayer, two rak’ahs, for the sake of Allah the Almighty.”

This intention can be recited in the heart or verbally before beginning the prayer.

How to Perform Dhuha Prayer

Dhuha prayer consists of at least two rak’ahs, but it can be performed in more rak’ahs as long as they are in pairs (e.g., 4, 6, or 8 rak’ahs). The procedure follows the general format of Sunnah prayers, with a few additional recommendations.

Steps for the First Rak’ah:

  1. Stand and recite the Takbiratul Ihram ("Allahu Akbar").
  2. Recite Surah Al-Fatihah (the Opening).
  3. Recite a short surah, such as Surah As-Syams or Surah Al-Ikhlas.
  4. Perform Ruku' (bowing) and then return to standing (I'tidal).
  5. Perform Sujud (prostration) twice, with a sitting pause in between.

Steps for the Second Rak’ah:

  1. Stand up and recite Surah Al-Fatihah again.
  2. Recite a short surah (same as the first rak’ah or a different one).
  3. Perform Ruku' and return to standing (I’tidal).
  4. Perform Sujud twice, with a sitting pause in between.
  5. After the second sujud, recite the Tashahhud (final sitting) and conclude with Salam ("Assalamu’alaikum warahmatullah").

If performing more than two rak’ahs, repeat the process in sets of two, concluding each set with Salam.

Supplication After Dhuha Prayer

After completing Dhuha prayer, it is encouraged to recite the following supplication, as reported by Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), who narrated that Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to say:

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي، وَتُبْ عَلَيَّ، إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ التَّوَّابُ الرَّحِيْمِ

Allahummaghfirli wa tub ‘alayya, innaka antat tawwabur rahiim

Meaning: “O Allah, forgive me and accept my repentance. Indeed, You are the Most Accepting of Repentance, the Most Merciful.” (Reported in Al-Adab Al-Mufrad by Bukhari, Hadith No. 619, and authenticated by Sheikh Al-Albani).

The Benefits of Dhuha Prayer

Dhuha prayer is not only spiritually rewarding but also provides numerous benefits for both this life and the Hereafter. Here are some of the key advantages:

  1. Brings Sustenance and Blessings

One of the greatest blessings of Dhuha prayer is the promise of increased provision. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

"Whoever performs the Dhuha prayer, Allah will provide sustenance for them from unexpected sources." (Hadith narrated by Muslim)

  1. Expiation of Sins

Dhuha prayer serves as a means of seeking forgiveness and erasing past sins. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

"In the human body, there are 360 joints, and each requires an act of charity every day. Praying two rak’ahs of Dhuha suffices as charity for all those joints." (Hadith narrated by Muslim)

  1. Improves Physical and Mental Well-being

Engaging in morning prayer, especially Dhuha, helps regulate daily activities and enhances mental focus. It also promotes physical well-being by improving blood circulation and reducing stress.

  1. Strengthens One’s Connection with Allah

Performing Dhuha prayer regularly deepens one’s faith and devotion. It is a way of expressing gratitude for the blessings of life and seeking Allah’s continued guidance.

The Virtues of Dhuha Prayer

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized the significance of Dhuha prayer in numerous hadiths. Here are some of its unique virtues:

  1. Equivalent to Giving Charity

Dhuha prayer is regarded as a substitute for daily charity. Every act of prayer in the morning is counted as a charitable deed.

  1. Brings Blessings to Daily Life

Praying Dhuha regularly attracts divine blessings, making one’s daily activities more fruitful and harmonious.

  1. Protection Under Allah’s Care

Allah promises protection and peace to those who sincerely perform Dhuha prayer. It brings tranquility to the heart and resilience in facing daily challenges.

  1. A Means of Erasing Minor Sins

Just as other Sunnah prayers serve as a means of purification, Dhuha prayer helps expiate minor sins, allowing one to seek a fresh start each day.

Embrace Dhuha Prayer for a Blessed Life

Dhuha prayer is a Sunnah act of worship filled with blessings. It not only brings sustenance but also erases sins, strengthens our connection with Allah Almighty, and brings prosperity into our lives. Though it takes only a short time to perform, the rewards and benefits are immense.

Make Dhuha prayer a part of your daily routine to invite blessings, happiness, and peace into your life. Additionally, as a way to express gratitude for Allah’s blessings, we are encouraged to give charity and perform good deeds. One easy way to give is through the Hijrah Amal feature in Muamalat DIN. With every good deed we perform, we draw closer to Allah and enhance the quality of our lives and those around us.
