What Is Lailatul Qadar? Meaning, Virtues, Recommended Deeds, and Tips to Seek the Blessed Night

During the month of Ramadan, Muslims around the world anticipate a night that carries extraordinary spiritual significance: Lailatul Qadar, often translated as The Night of Decree or The Night of Power. This night is described in the Qur’an as being better than a thousand months, making it one of the most meaningful opportunities for worship in the entire Islamic calendar.

Because of its immense reward and blessings, many Muslims increase their worship during the last ten nights of Ramadan, hoping to encounter this sacred night.

But what exactly is Lailatul Qadar? Why is it so special, and what acts of worship are recommended on this night?

This article explores the meaning of Lailatul Qadar, its virtues, when it occurs, recommended practices, and practical tips to make the most of this blessed night.

What Is Lailatul Qadar?

Lailatul Qadar comes from two Arabic words: lailah, meaning night, and qadr, which can mean decree, honor, value, or destiny. Together, the phrase refers to a night of great honor when Allah determines and arranges many affairs for His creation.

The significance of Lailatul Qadar is explained directly in the Qur’an, in Surah Al-Qadr:

Meaning:

“Indeed, We sent the Qur’an down during the Night of Decree. And what can make you know what the Night of Decree is? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months. The angels and the Spirit descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter. Peace it is until the emergence of dawn.” (QS. Al-Qadr: 1–5)

These verses highlight several key points. Lailatul Qadar is the night when the Qur’an was first revealed, and it is filled with peace, mercy, and divine blessings until the break of dawn.

When Does Lailatul Qadar Occur?

The exact date of Lailatul Qadar is not specifically revealed. However, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ provided guidance that it occurs during the last ten nights of Ramadan, particularly on the odd-numbered nights.

The Prophet ﷺ said: “Seek Lailatul Qadar in the odd nights of the last ten nights of Ramadan.” (Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim)

The nights most often associated with the possibility of Lailatul Qadar include:

  • The 21st night of Ramadan
  • The 23rd night
  • The 25th night
  • The 27th night
  • The 29th night

Because its exact timing remains unknown, Muslims are encouraged to increase their worship throughout all ten nights rather than focusing on only one specific night.

The Virtues of Lailatul Qadar

Lailatul Qadar holds many extraordinary virtues that make it one of the most significant nights in Islam.

1. Better Than a Thousand Months

The most widely known virtue is that acts of worship performed on this night are better than worship performed over a thousand months, which equals more than 83 years.

This means a single night of sincere devotion can carry the reward of decades of worship. For many Muslims, it is an opportunity to renew their faith and multiply their good deeds.

2. The Night the Qur’an Was Revealed

Lailatul Qadar marks the beginning of the revelation of the Qur’an to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ through the Angel Jibril. Because the Qur’an serves as guidance for humanity, the night of its revelation holds immense spiritual value.

3. Angels Descend With Blessings

The Qur’an describes how angels descend to the earth during this night, bringing peace and blessings. The atmosphere of the night is often described as calm and spiritually uplifting until dawn.

4. A Night of Forgiveness

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

“Whoever stands in prayer during Lailatul Qadar with faith and seeking reward will have their previous sins forgiven.” (Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim)

This hadith shows that Lailatul Qadar is a powerful opportunity for seeking forgiveness and spiritual renewal.

Recommended Acts of Worship on Lailatul Qadar

To make the most of this blessed night, Muslims are encouraged to increase various acts of worship.

1. Performing Night Prayer (Qiyamul Lail)

Night prayers are among the most important acts on Lailatul Qadar. These may include:

  • Tarawih prayer
  • Tahajjud prayer
  • Other voluntary prayers

Performing these prayers with sincerity and reflection helps deepen spiritual connection.

2. Reciting the Qur’an

Since Lailatul Qadar commemorates the revelation of the Qur’an, spending time reading and reflecting on its verses is highly recommended.

Many people dedicate extra time during the last ten nights of Ramadan to complete their Qur’an recitation.

3. Making Supplication (Dua)

One of the most recommended supplications for Lailatul Qadar was taught by the Prophet ﷺ to Aisyah (RA):

اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ تُحِبُّ العَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي

Meaning: “O Allah, You are Most Forgiving, and You love forgiveness, so forgive me.”

This simple yet powerful dua focuses on seeking Allah’s mercy and forgiveness.

4. Remembering Allah Through Dhikr

Dhikr helps maintain focus and mindfulness throughout the night. Common forms of remembrance include:

  • Tasbih (Subhanallah)
  • Tahmid (Alhamdulillah)
  • Takbir (Allahu Akbar)
  • Istighfar (seeking forgiveness)

These simple acts of remembrance can be performed anytime during the night.

5. Giving Charity

Charity is always encouraged in Islam, and the reward becomes even greater during the last nights of Ramadan. Supporting charitable causes or helping those in need can multiply the reward when done with sincere intentions. You can easily give charity through the ZISWAF feature on Muamalat DIN, anytime and from anywhere.

Signs of Lailatul Qadar

Some narrations mention signs often associated with Lailatul Qadar, although they should not be treated as absolute indicators.

Commonly mentioned signs include:

  • The night feels calm and peaceful
  • The weather is neither too hot nor too cold
  • The sun rises the next morning with soft light

However, these signs may not always be easily recognized. Because of that, Muslims are encouraged to remain consistent in worship during all of the last ten nights of Ramadan.

Tips to Seek Lailatul Qadar

Since the exact night is unknown, preparation and consistency are key. Here are practical tips to increase the chances of experiencing Lailatul Qadar.

1. Focus on the Last Ten Nights of Ramadan

Begin increasing worship from the 21st night until the end of Ramadan. Consistency during this period ensures that the blessed night is not missed.

2. Create a Simple Worship Plan

A structured plan can help maintain focus. For example:

  • Night prayer
  • Qur’an recitation
  • Dhikr and supplication
  • Quiet reflection

Even a simple routine can make the nights more meaningful.

3. Reduce Unnecessary Activities

Limiting distractions such as excessive screen time or late-night social activities can help preserve energy for worship.

4. Perform I’tikaf in the Mosque

If possible, spending time in i’tikaf during the last ten nights allows a person to dedicate themselves fully to worship and reflection.

5. Maintain Sincerity and Intention

The true value of worship lies in sincerity and intention. Approaching the night with humility, hope, and faith can deepen the spiritual experience.

A Night of Extraordinary Opportunity

Lailatul Qadar is one of the greatest blessings of Ramadan. Its reward, described as better than a thousand months, makes it a remarkable opportunity for every Muslim to seek forgiveness, increase devotion, and strengthen their relationship with Allah.
