Welcome the Islamic New Year 1447 H with These Meaningful Prayers Before and After Maghrib

The Islamic New Year is a deeply spiritual moment for Muslims around the world. Soon, we’ll enter the year 1447 Hijri, marking a perfect opportunity for self-reflection (muhasabah), sincere repentance, and heartfelt prayers for the year ahead.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ encouraged us to end the passing year and begin the new one by turning to Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala in prayer, a beautiful practice to express gratitude, seek forgiveness, and ask for His mercy and guidance.

So, when is the best time to recite these prayers, and what are the recommended duas? Here's a complete guide to help you observe this meaningful moment.

When and How to Recite the Duas

According to many scholars, including references from NU Online, there are two specific times recommended for these duas, both to be recited three times each:

  • Year-End Dua (1446 H): Read three times before Maghrib on the last day of Dzulhijjah.
  • New Year Dua (1447 H): Read three times after Maghrib on the first night of Muharram.

The early moments of the new Hijri year are especially blessed. As KH Sholeh Darat once said, “Whoever recites the New Year dua three times after Maghrib on the first night of Muharram, the devil will say: This child of Adam is now safe for the rest of the year, as Allah assigns two angels to protect them from Satan’s temptations.”

The End-of-Year Prayer (1446 H)

This supplication is offered as a heartfelt plea for forgiveness for all the sins and shortcomings committed throughout the past year. The following prayer is cited from the book Maslakul Akhyar by Habib Utsman bin Yahya.

Allâhumma mâ ‘amiltu min ‘amalin fî hâdzihis sanati mâ nahaitanî ‘anhu, wa lam atub minhu, wa hamalta fîhâ ‘alayya bi fadhlika ba‘da qudratika ‘alâ ‘uqûbatî, wa da‘autanî ilat taubati min ba‘di jarâ’atî ‘alâ ma‘shiyatik. Fa innî astaghfiruka, faghfirlî wa mâ ‘amiltu fîhâ mimmâ tardhâ, wa wa‘attanî ‘alaihits tsawâba, fa’as’aluka an tataqabbala minnî wa lâ taqtha‘ rajâ’î minka yâ karîm.

"My Lord, I ask for Your forgiveness for any act I committed this year that You forbade—which I have not yet repented for, and for which You, in Your grace, showed forbearance despite Your power to punish me. You called me to repent after my audacity in disobeying You. Therefore, I seek Your forgiveness, so forgive me. And for the deeds I performed this year that earned Your pleasure and for which You promised a reward, I ask You to accept them from me and not to sever my hope in You, O Most Generous."

The New-Year Prayer (1447 H)

Upon entering the new year after Maghrib, we are encouraged to offer this supplication, seeking Allah's protection, mercy, and goodness for the entire year to come.

Allâhumma antal abadiyyul qadîmul awwal. Wa ‘alâ fadhlikal ‘azhîmi wa karîmi jûdikal mu‘awwal. Hâdzâ ‘âmun jadîdun qad aqbal. As’alukal ‘ishmata fîhi minas syaithâni wa auliyâ’ih, wal ‘auna ‘alâ hâdzihin nafsil ammârati bis sû’i, wal isytighâla bimâ yuqarribunî ilaika zulfâ, yâ dzal jalâli wal ikrâm.

"My Lord, You are the Eternal, the Pre-Existing, the First. Upon Your immense grace and noble generosity, we rely. A new year has now arrived. I ask You for protection within it from Satan and his allies. I ask for Your help in overcoming the soul that inclines towards evil and for guidance to occupy myself with what draws me closer to You. O Lord of Majesty and Honor."

Complete Your Prayers with Meaningful Action

While these duas hold great spiritual merit, welcoming the Islamic New Year isn’t just about words — it’s also about action. We ask Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala for mercy, protection, good health, halal sustenance, and to grant us husnul khatimah (a good ending). But we also need to embody those hopes through good deeds.

Here are some ways to start 1447 H with purpose:

  • Observe voluntary fasts — especially on Tasu'a and Ashura (9th and 10th of Muharram)
  • Increase your remembrance of Allah (dzikr)
  • Read and reflect on the Qur’an regularly
  • Give generously in charity (sadaqah)

You can conveniently give charity through Hijrah Amal, available on the Muamalat DIN mobile banking app. Let’s begin this new chapter with a pure heart and open hands, ready to share, grow, and stay guided under His divine light.
